Two days ago, I was freakin’ out over this HTTP/IO Error problem I was having.

It came to me yesterday that maybe my Basic Auth had to do with it. And in fact, your post validates that assumption.

XML-RPC requests (for those that use it) will also be blocked by Basic Auth. You can add xmlrpc.php to the list of excluded files in the .htaccess rules to get around this.
